That means a proper concrete foundation under each step, consistently sized risers and treads so the rise is safe and even, and a stone choice that will not flake or stain through the North West's wet winters. We work with natural sandstone, natural limestone, and quality reconstituted stone products. Every tread is set with a forward drainage fall so water runs off the nose rather than pooling in joints, and each step is mortar-bedded solid with no rocking or movement. Handrail fixings can be prepared at the same time if required.

Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, granite — is quarried and cut to size. Each piece is unique in colour and texture. Reconstituted stone is manufactured from aggregate and cement to replicate the look of natural stone, but at a more consistent size and finish. Both are durable; the right choice depends on the look you want and how much colour variation you are comfortable with.
The main factors are surface texture, tread pitch, and drainage. We use stone with a riven or brushed surface rather than polished, grade every tread so water runs off the nose, and avoid tight horizontal joints that trap standing water. In exposed positions we can discuss additional anti-slip treatment.
